What are the characteristics of polypropylene short fibers used in engineering?

Polypropylene staple fiber, also known as PP fiber or polypropylene. Polypropylene short fibers are made from polypropylene raw materials using a one-step short-range spinning process. Polypropylene began industrial production in 1957. Due to the fact that only propylene is needed as the raw material, it has a relatively abundant and inexpensive source, and a simple production process, making it a relatively inexpensive synthetic fiber at present. Polypropylene has good performance and a fast development speed. Its production worldwide is second only to polyester, nylon, acrylic, etc.

Characteristics and uses of polypropylene short fibers for engineering purposes:

Relative density: Polypropylene fiber has the lower relative density among all synthetic fibers, about 0.91g/cm3, making it extremely lightweight and capable of covering a larger area per unit weight of fibers.

Strength: The strength of polypropylene is similar to that of high-strength varieties such as polyester and nylon in synthetic fibers, but its strength remains almost unchanged in the wet state, which is better than that of nylon.

Wear resistance and corrosion resistance: The flat wear resistance of polypropylene is second only to nylon, but its bending wear resistance is slightly inferior. Corrosion resistance: It has significant stability to inorganic acids and bases.

Moisture absorption and dyeing properties: Polypropylene is almost non hygroscopic, with a moisture regain rate of less than 0.03%. The shrinkage rate of the fabric is small, and fine denier polypropylene has a strong wicking effect. Poor dyeing fastness, ordinary fuels cannot dye it.

Electrical insulation and warmth retention: Polypropylene has a high electrical resistivity (7 × 10 Ω. cm), with a low thermal conductivity, polypropylene has better electrical insulation and warmth retention compared to other chemical fibers, but is prone to generating static electricity during processing.

Heat resistance and aging resistance: Polypropylene has a low melting point (165-173 ℃) and poor stability to light and heat. Therefore, polypropylene has poor heat resistance and aging resistance, and is not resistant to ironing. However, the anti-aging property can be improved by adding anti-aging agent during spinning.

In addition, like other synthetic fibers, polypropylene is less prone to mold and decay, and is not afraid of insect infestation.

Polypropylene short fibers are currently widely used in geotextiles, sanitary materials, filter fabrics, cool fabrics, various non-woven fabrics, automotive interiors, spinning, carpets, engineering materials, composite materials, filling materials, sound insulation and heat insulation, felt products and other industries.

Hubei Botao Synthetic Fiber Co., Ltd. was founded in October 2000 and is located in Jingmen City, Hubei Province. It specializes in the production and sales of polypropylene, polyester, composite fibers, and polylactic acid short fibers. Its products are mainly used in industries such as non-woven fabrics, automotive interiors, geotextiles, carpets, and filters.
